Ten good reasons to discover the Ross of Mull this autumn

September 7, 2017

Here we are at the beginning of September with the busiest part of our first season behind us - and it was busier than we ever imagined it would be!  The wonderful natural outdoor environment here has attracted walkers, cyclists, birders, botanists, geologists, archaeologists and pilgrims amongst others to try our new accommodation in Ross of Mull Bunkhouse

We are pleased that the affordable bunkhouse-style accommodation we are offering is welcomed by visitors to our part of Mull. We have had an amazing mix of wonderful guests, from students, families and touring cyclists to school groups and wedding parties.  We have also discovered that the Bunkhouse, with just 8 beds, is a very attractive proposition for exclusive use. Our guests get all the benefits of privacy and self-catering but can choose to book for any number of nights, starting on any day of the week, unlike the standard self-catering cottage.

Here are our ten good reasons to stay on the Ross of Mull in September or October

1. The busy high season is over, yet all facilities are still fully available with a more relaxed pace of life.

2. The ferries and roads are a lot quieter, travelling is a pleasure

3. The Ross of Mull is famous for its wildlife and autumn is one of the best times. It’s a good time to go otter spotting and listen for the red deer rut. From late September through to November, Atlantic grey seals come ashore to breed (particularly around the Treshnish Isles)

4. Iona in particular can get very busy in the peak season; now is the time to visit the island and Iona Abbey and soak in the peace and tranquillity

5. The weather can be better than the summer months for outdoor exploration; the boat trips to Staffa and Fingal’s Cave which leave from Fionnphort Pier are still running.

6. Sunrises and sunsets are amazing here and well timed for breakfast and mid-evening, the perfect time to take an evening stroll

7. Local produce is at its best; enjoy sourcing your own ingredients from local producers for a healthy cook-up in the bunkhouse.

8. We don’t get many midgies here, and by September there is no sign of them at all.

9. The many beaches are glorious at any time of the year and the autumn is no exception

10. Night fall is earlier and there is no light pollution so on clear nights the stars can be seen clearly on a walk back from the pub!

So why not plan an affordable break in the autumn relaxing in our idyllic part of the world? The Bunkhouse is great for small groups, families, couples and individuals:

  • Exclusive use for 8 guests
  • Hire a bunk room as a private room for 4 or less with a dedicated bathroom
  • Come on your own or with friends and share!
